Jason Ewert is back with another DWebb review, this time of The House Show.

Simply put, Derek preaches the Gospel, and he preaches it in such a way as to leave the listener no option of escape.

Amen.

So I went to Nashville on Saturday night to see Sandra play, and that Derek guy was there. Here’s what I learned that’s for public consumption:

1. Derek is recording guitar and lead vocals at his house. His INO deal has him paying to the recording of each album, so he figured that, rather than rent someone else’s stuff, he’d buy some equipment and record it himself, because then he has the equipment for next time around. Works for me. Derek will be recording for a goodly chunk of July, then will go into a studio for mastering, overdubs, etc. I’m sure that it won’t be overproduced—come on, this is D-rock—and frankly, there’s not much time to overproduce it. You’ll have it in your hands before the end of ‘04.
2. Sandra is indeed selling Best Laid Plans in the UK with a label, but Stateside sales will be through her site and perhaps Paste. [We had a funny chat about how she didn't want to use Grassroots.] The release date’s August 3rd, and orders should be able to be taken on or about then. You will be getting the UK packaging; it’s possible that this album could be re-released through a US label at a later date with different packaging … can you say, “Buying the UK version will mean an instant collector’s item”?
3. Derek was very into doing another IRC chat with us sometime in July: “I’ll be needing a break, definitely.” We’ll work up a time in another thread and have a sit down with the man. I might could get Sandra to agree to one as well if I asked real nice.

We are looking at having that chat with Derek sometime in mid-July. Details when we know them.
