June 12th Interview with Derek

GM: I think its gonna change as everybody sees you, for a little bit—

DW: But the thing is, that’s always how I’ve considered it. But I think it’s confusing when you do something that looks like overt, full-time ministry, and you do that for a season. You know and the House Shows, that was for a season. The record on the Church, that was a season. And now everybody wants me to do the same thing, well how is this about the Church? How is this about the Gospel? Well I don’t know. Well I mean in my personal life, it can tell you all kind of ways. I mean you and I can have a conversation and all of the sudden it does become about all that. But my job is to make good music. That’s my job. So think about all that. I won’t criticize you for the way you do your job. I mean, I just think it’s important to remember some of that.

And if anyone has questions on that, you can direct people to pick up Steve Turner’s book Imagine, which is a book about being a Christian the arts. And he has a whole chunk of it that’s about being an artist and a believer does not mean that you are called into full-time vocational ministry. They are not the same thing. That doesn’t mean you can’t be, you can certainly be a Christian and have gifts in the arts, and go be in full-time ministry, you better believe you can but you don’t have to. It’s not a obligation, it’s not a requirement. Just like its not in any other vocation. Because if it were then we’d all be evangelists and we wouldn’t have people with all the other gifts that we’re told in scripture are worth a lot, have a lot of value as well. So I think that’s a good place to direct people if they have more questions about art, being a Christian artist vs. being in full-time ministry. Even artists should go and read that, because many have these obligations they feel like they can’t just write songs, they can’t just make good art, it has to be ministry-driven. And it doesn’t have to be.

GM: Well you just keep making good music, and I guess we’ll keep buyin it, buddy.

DW: Yeah well, you will anyway, that’s Geof.

GM: Trying to keep food on the table there at the Webb household—

DW: —Or else all the ministry to hungry people’s gonna be comin’ to MY house!

GM: Thanks Derek, for your time.

DW: Absolutely.
