So Derek will be playing a one-hour show at The Rutledge in Nashville on the 3rd of July. I’ll be there if I have to sleep in my car to hold my place in line. [Actually, I'll just go eat at the Mexican place next door. I've been to The Rutledge many a time at this point.]

Yeah, so we’ve been letting Derek drive the bus lately on news about Stockholm Syndrome. It’s his bus. But now there’s a code to figure out, and … well, Bryan is a crazy Lost fan, so you know we’re all about it.

We don’t figure we’re going to solve the puzzle; we will, however, summarize what’s known about the puzzle to date. So, here’s what we know as of mid-morning on May 19th:

Derekwebb.com is offline. The cryptic message from derek’s email is paradise is a parking lot, and paradiseisaparkinglot.com looks like it has some fun goodies for us.
With derekwebb.com being offline, his message board is gone. Some of the regulars have reconstructed their community at She Must and Shall No Longer Exist: the webboard reloaded.
We also have discussion of Stockholm Syndrome on our message board at rocksmyfaceoff.net.

There are 20 stems on paradiseisaparkinglot.com … what could that mean? A 20-track record? 20 stems of one song? We’ll find out together.

We’ve got a new song to sing: Derek did re-sign with INO, and the next record ~~comes out~~ will be finished in February; it ought to come out in May. We think it’ll be different. We’re sure some of you won’t like it—but then that’s been true of each of the last few records, right? We can’t tell you what it’ll sound like [because we don't really know] or who he’s working with [we do], but … it’s probably not what you’re expecting. Unless, of course, you’re expecting the Spanish Inquisition.

And instead of that, let’s present two things:

Sandra let slip today that she and Derek are expecting a little sister for Mr. Rhodes in February.

Michael Spencer, who styles himself as the Internet Monk, wrote today about Christian counter-cultural music. Sound like any wee bald laddies we know?

Listen to Derek Webb’s take on a Dylan-esque voice, and notice how the mainstream Christian music industry attempted to pigeonhole him for being too political. Webb continues to be at the center of a different kind of Christian art; a socially conscious, challenging voice of a counter culture that resists the “mainstreaming” of the Christian artistic voice into the Christian ghetto. “We Don’t Have A Savior On Capital Hill” isn’t going to make it on K-Love anytime soon.

Monk decries the mainstream evangelical culture, speaking further about the “Christian ghetto” and name-dropping the Square Peg Alliance:

Christian radio will not play these voices. They will not be leading the bouncing worship songs at your next youth event. They are not entertaining the sheep into a state of altered- and largely insensitive- consciousness.

You will find them at Square Peg Alliance and Paste Music. You’ll hear them cited as “indy folk” more than Christian. You’ll have to endure the question “But is that really Christian music?”

Evangelicals have now produced a massive consumeristic niche ready to buy, wear and applaud whatever fits in its pre-described mold of entertainment oriented discipleship and warm, fuzzy, evangelical experience.

We figure that most of you are nodding your heads vigorously. We were.

If you’ve looked at the front of [derekwebb.net] in the last week, you’ve seen stuff about the Art * Music * Justice Tour. That tour will have:

For a little on the show, we talked to David McCollum:

As to this tour, the general concept of the night will be in support of IJM and Food for the Hungry, it will feature Sara as an emcee or sorts; then each of the artists will have their own time on stage to walk through their experiences in relation to the social justice and poverty issues addressed by each organization.

Dates are being booked from 18 Sep 2008 – 26 Oct 2008. A number of shows are already booked, but there are still slots available. The man to contact for booking is Bryan Myers of Creative Artists Agency.

I think it’s safe to say that this pretty well skewers everyone involved—which, if you think about it, is really Derek’s point. You may not agree with the point, or with how its expressed in this highly sarcastic video, but you have to agree that it gets made loud and clear.

A happy first birthday to Derek and Sandra’s delightful little boy, Rhodes. Yeah, it’s been a year already. Crazy, no?

And Derek’s other child came into being this week—NoiseTrade finally launched. [You will be forgiven if you were wondering if it would ever happen.] We’ve all been playing with it for a while, and I think it’s safe to say that it’s pretty cool.
