Act Like a Grownup

A couple weeks ago, Derek sarcastically responded to people who had been criticizing his statements from an article in The Huffington Post about tolerance in the contemporary American church. Plenty of people had reasoned arguments. Plenty more were really sarcastic, sophomoric takedowns of Derek, casting aspersions all over the place.

As someone who considers Derek to be a friend, this dismayed me greatly, especially because he and I come from different faith traditions, as I am a United Methodist and hold to its tenets. You can disagree with someone, even strongly, and do so in a very loving way. I came to know Derek starting in the 2003 timeframe, right as his solo career was kicking off. Everyone who knew of my faith leanings knew that Derek and I were opposed in a lot of soteriological ways, and they also knew that Derek used to really rough people up for being Arminians back in the day. He and I have never had a cross word about soteriology, because we believe that we share so much more in our theology than we don’t.

as a general rule: i'm fine with responses and i'm fine if folks wanna unfollow. but please don't issue an 'unfollow threat' as a response
@derekwebb
derek webb

I’ve created an Editorial category for this entry, purely because I want to say that anyone issuing an unfollow threat is acting foolishly. On Twitter, you choose whom you follow. On Twitter, you choose whom you follow. On Twitter, you choose whom you follow.

If Derek Webb says something that you don’t like on Twitter, don’t follow him. If you don’t like the things he says in interviews, just don’t keep him on your horizon. Derek Webb doesn’t owe you anything for your fandom. You’ve bought his records, you’ve attended his concerts, and you’ve told your friends about him. You’ve helped him make a living so that he can provide for his family. If you decide that you don’t like his music for any artistic reason, stop supporting it. Don’t buy it. Don’t recommend it to friends. Don’t go to a show.

The way that I have always understood Derek’s career is this: he tells the truth as he understands it. I think that we as Christians understand that none of us fully perceive God’s Truth. Because of this, we are left with everyone grasping for the truth as they understand it. There’s an old saw that the level of a man’s intelligence is the degree to which he agrees with you. If you though that Derek Webb was really smart when he wrote She Must and Shall Go Free and really offbase when he wrote Stockholm Syndrome, then you’ve got the problem here.

Reasonable people can reasonably agree. Unreasonable people issue unfollow threats on Twitter. I firmly believe that an unfollow threat says much, much more about the person issuing it than the target.

    Very well said.

  2. Travis mckee says:

    But if people don’t tell him how ‘wrong’ he is how will they accomplish Christ’s call to go into all the world and make judgements against all nations?

    But seriously, the reactions seem to be like they own Derek Webb and he speaks for them. If that’s the case, they do need to grow up and find their own voice and stop insisting on another person to express their own personal beliefs.

    Yes, sir. It’s the investment thing that gets me.

  4. Alayna Feiling says:

    I agree with everything you said, except, “If you though that Derek Webb was really smart when he wrote She Must and Shall Go Free and really offbase when he wrote Stockholm Syndrome, then you’ve got the problem here.”

    I don’t have the same connection with Stockholm Syndrome as the other albums. I would go as far as to say it was slightly offbase but I certainly don’t have a “problem.” To say that I was confused and disappointed when I first heard it is an understatement. It grew on me and I eventually ended up loving it, but lyrically certain tracks lacked. I obviously can’t speak to his faith at the time he wrote it but as a songwriter, if I had reached my peak, Stockholm Syndrome would be the next album I wrote when worldly values spoke to me louder than the word of God. I still could write a book on how much I respect and admire Derek Webb. So no problem, just observation.

  5. *daniel says:

    You know, I did exactly that, I unfollowed him. But not because of theology or whatever, just because of the general drama and a certain sense of meanness I got. I don’t know what it was. It was probably me.

    Either way, out of sight, out of mind. I hadn’t thought about it again until now.

Matthew Smith on Feedback

You may know Matthew Smith as a part of the Indelible Grace effort, or you may know his solo work. Tonight, he posted a run of tweets about Feedback, which will be released next Tuesday.

Here are SEVEN THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW about the new @ instrumental worship record, FEEDBACK:
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
@ IS A STRONG PRESCENCE. Her sense of melody is all over this record. And the musical partnership works seamlessly. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
INSTRUMENTAL DOESN’T MEAN NO SINGING. Vocals are used as an instrument, with a good deal of singing, but without words. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
CLASSICALLY COMPOSED DOESN’T MEAN CLASSICAL. Modern instrumentation, classically structured. Can't be confused with Mozart. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
WORSHIP RECORD? IT’S A SOUNDTRACK. A soundtrack to prayer. If you're down w/ http://esv.to/1thes5.17, it’s a soundtrack to life. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
IT'S NOT A THROWAWAY SIDE PROJECT. Don’t skip it because it’s not a standard pop release. Derek's not a standard pop artist. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
IT’S A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME. He's using programming to create expansive sonic landscapes without budget constraints. Brilliant. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith
IT WILL OFFEND YOU. It’s art that invites you to engage, not just consume. These days, that's more scandalous than swear words. #feedback
@matthewsmithUS
Matthew Smith

Derek sent me a download link for Feedback on Saturday night, and I gave it a listen Sunday morning. I liked Matthew’s statement about it being “a soundtrack to prayer”. If you need encouragement for a long prayer/study session, wanting to get immersed in what you’re doing but have an audible cue for when you should complete, Feedback clocks in around 37 minutes.

    I bought Feedback this morning precisely for the reason you suggested above, as a soundtrack to prayer. It’s just what I’ve been looking for. Well done again, Derek.

Bootlegs, Reloaded

You may remember the short-lived indieriver.net bootleg-trading service. It was shut down for a number of reasons, the main one being that it proved technically challenging for many users, who just wanted high-quality MP3s and didn’t care about all the nerdy lossless audio and all that, much less being interested in trying to figure out BitTorrent, etc. As a result, the service was shut down in favor of something less daunting: archive.org’s Live Music Archive. That’s not to say that LMA is easy, but we’ll explain it for you.

On any show page, you can stream the audio to check to see if you want to download it. You can also embed this on any Web page that you like. If, for example, you recorded a show and wanted to announce that fact to the world, it’s as simple as using that embedding function.

If you’re wanting just the MP3s in a simple convenient format, click the “VBR ZIP” link in the left-hand sidebar. You’ll get a happy ZIP file with all the MP3s—nothing more, nothing less. Drop that in iTunes and you’ll be listening in seconds.

Now, if you care about lossless audio, MD5 sums, metadata, et al … that’s all still available. The easiest way to download everything is to hit the “All Files: HTTP” link. LMA used to support download via FTP, but sadly that is no more.

Go forth and download. I’ll be getting the Derek backlog up I have from all my taping, plus the shows that other tapers shared, out on the Live Music Archive repository for Derek Webb soon. You may pester me in the comments if this goes slowly. Happy downloading!

    Is that first one a Caedmon’s show? Shouldn’t Caedmon’s Call have a separate listing on there?

    In any case, thanks for getting this going – I have a few shows I’ll contribute myself one of these days.

  2. No, it’s one of the rare solo shows he did back then. Yes, Caedmon’s Call should have a repository, but I haven’t gotten the request through and approved yet. Patience.

  3. Jeremy Goss says:

    Brilliant! Looking forward to checking out some shows. Thanks for all your work Geof…. and all those that have submitted.

  4. Aaron J. Percy says:

    I have a board mix recording with crowd mics from a festival show summer of ’09 waiting to be edited/mixed then I can upload it for you.

  1. morgan says:

    I got my preorder! I love the t-shirt, I like it more than I expected. I only got this package to be part of the Democracy Vol I project, but my t-shirt is sweet and I’m wearing it right now!

    much like the website clues, the liner notes spell out ‘loveyousm’ which as far as I can tell is not a website, but I’m assuming a reference to Sandra. I already have been listening to the digital download, but I’m glad to have a couple copies to give away. I’m a little bummed that the ‘explicit’ version is in a cardboard sleeve and the regular release is in a jewel case–not because I like jewel cases, but I do like the booklet.

    Anyway, I was super excited to get it in the mail.

  2. Ethan T Perkins says:

    Got mine on Friday! I really like the t-shirt. Just like Ampersand it’s an American Apparel shirt, so it’s nice and worn in! I received both the CD’s. The only thing I didn’t like was I didn’t know which one was the “clean” and which one was the “dirty.” They were packaged different and I was planning on giving the “clean” one to a friend but now both are opened and I think giving a already opened CD is a little tacky!

    Overall, 100

  3. Joe Richards says:

    Overall, I like the album though I’ve only had opportunity to listen to it through once and then again partially. I work with badly abused/neglected boys ages 7-12 years and this cd will likely not make it into the mix on Sunday mornings or at bedtime. Perhaps the cleaned up version will but then too, though they’d like the music, I doubt they’d ‘get it’. Heck I’m having a difficult time getting some of it. I like the bannished song an awful lot. Honest, truthful, nice to have a sense that someone in the Christian world is not out to crucify me based on one facet of who I am and lift in prayer daily. I can understand the record label not releasing the song but really, it has released it albeit only through the ‘webb’ site. I won’t hold it against INO one bit and maybe don’t get the ‘controversy’ over the lablel saying no to the song. It’s my favorite on the album, it’s also the one song that is clearly understandable out of the whole bunch for me. That’s probably why it’s my favorite. I like that it’s point isn’t hidden. I’m looking forward to spending more time with the record and getting to know it better. It makes me want to pull out my old “Kid A” album and fire that baby up again. Thanks Mr. Webb for this outing. You’ve got to step in the dark for your Light to show the Way.

  4. matthew casserilla says:

    Musically entertaining. A Ringing Bell pt. 2., more fragmented though. I’ve allowed Webb to challenge my thoughts on several issues, but I’m not exactly sure what is being communicated this time. There’s a lot of gaps lyrically that allow me to write in my own meaning. Is that by design? Admittedly I’m a distant fan and do not possess the Rosetta Stone of proper interpretation. Maybe I have to listen to it backwards. Critique aside, creatively unique and dreamy.

  5. Matt says:

    I got mine end of last week as well and love the shirt! I wore it the next day and I’m going to be keeping my eye out to see if I spot it around town, haha. I’ve been listening to my digital download since release and burned a copy on a CD for the car, so I’ve had it for a while but it’s awesome to have a real copy now. Just gave one to my bro-in-law to take back to his college and listen to. And to Ethan and anyone else contemplating getting these albums, you can tell which version is which by just looking at the back to see what songs are on it. You don’t have to open them in case you are gift giving.

  6. Just downloaded the album, and I love it! Musically, I appreciated the departure from the mainstream of Christian music. I also appreciate Derek’s willingness to tackle issues and subjects that most Christian artists are not concerned with. Keep up the good work!

The End is the Beginning… (Pt. 1)

“The beauty of you naming this ‘Stockholm Syndrome,’ I exclaimed to Derek, “is that all those haters out there could have stopped this train ride for themselves at anytime!”

As we sat next to Fort Sumner in Derek’s backyard we discussed the whole fiasco with the man who was one of about three folks driving the Stockholm Syndrome train. As things came out this thing got more and more beautiful. But I digress. Let’s go back to the beginning of the night.

    Here’s an audio transcript of what Moseley said.

    [On "the song"]

    Moseley: ‘You know, we had a little disagreement. I think what I want to say is, I respect Derek, I respect his art, I enjoy having him [as] a part of the INO family and on the INO roster. But we obviously hit an impasse, and in the midst of the last couple months, there’s been a lot of interesting things go on, and I’m here to tell you that they were all true. I heard somebody say that this really was all a big publicity stunt–not true at all. What it is is an example of grown men who respect each other who disagree, and as Derek has said, somehow take some lemons and a little water and sugar and come up with some lemonade. Right?’

    Webb: ‘Yep.’

    Moseley: ‘We seem to have done that throughout our history together. We’ve been banned from more Christian bookstores than you probably even know exist. [Laughter, cheers] And, you know what, this record will probably continue that trend. But we’ve come to a compromise–and I appreciate Derek’s part in this–and there are going to be two versions of the record. The record will be releasing, and it will be coming out September first. So we’re very, very pleased about that. Derek’s gonna kind of tell you a little bit about the differences [between] the two things. But I just wanted to say thank you so much for being interested, even though as I read the blogs, and I read some things, a good part of that probably wasn’t real flattering on my part. But I just want to say thanks for your interest and for being here and being supportive of Derek. We think Derek’s a really important artist; at times he’s an agent provocateur. Someone told me, I think it was really about journalism, but we say this about music and art, that hopefully what we do will comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. And Derek knows how to do the latter very well. [Laughter] I love the guy, thank you for coming, September the first, Stockholm Syndrome, two different versions! And I’m sure he will tell you how you can get the one that he calls the “authorized version.” [Laughter] Thank you.’

    I listened to “The Ringing Bell” and enjoyed it, but after reading about the viral shit, which I have no patience for at all, I was ready to fucking savage Webb’s new album when I heard it.

    Just DL’d it, and damn, this actually rocks! I’m liking this more than that last album. Good work Derek Webb. And Josh Moore too, I guess, if you produced it. Quality is much much better than “The Ringing Bell.”

    Just drop the bullshit viral scheme next time. Glad I avoided it, and, God, I can’t stand even reading about it. You’ve got a fucking awesome record, just release it. Jeez.

    Oh, and that “controversy” is fucking hysterical. Victorian England much? Hahaha, wow. Must be hard as balls navigating those waters.

  22. No, really, anyone have any information on the October 22 Houston show? A venue? Anything?

  23. Trey says:

    Can we please get some dates in the Northeast! I was on edge waiting for an artifact within 150 miles of me… but no dice. Please, at least bring the tour this way. I know, its probably not where Derek’s biggest fan base is, but, come on!

  24. Michaelman says:

    Part 2, part 2, part 2!

    But alas, I shall be patient.

  25. The entire “Stockholm Syndrome” situation is simply one, long promotional game. Caedmon’s Call used to do a lot of the same type of stuff; the ol’ “Ooh, aren’t we sooo mysterious?” routine. And “Look at us, we’re sooo angst-ridden”, when in actuality they’re just a bunch of narcissistic wannabe alternative rocker-types. Using the words damn and shit is controversial?? You’re kidding, right? Again, publicity stunt, and nothing more. Now I’M going to be “controversial”…ready?….I can’t believe people are really falling for this DAMN SHIT. See? Now I’M controversial, too. Easy, ‘eh?

  26. Wanda Mccormick says:

    I don’t know what any of this is about. I just wanna see Derek doing his thing, and he isn’t coming to the Detroit area anytime soon. I “get” you Derek. I love your energy. You’re a troublemaker for sure, but I’m poor and we don’t have money in this part of the US for bus tickets, let alone plane tickets. I’m 57 and aint about to hitch hike. Let me have a story for my Grand babies. I’d LOVE to see you live, talk to you a bit, and listen to your story. I’d love to hear you live. I’m just sayin……
